Wolverhampton Business Front
Wolverhampton is a very industrious city. Engineering and service based industry make up a large portion of the local economy, although the largest employer is the local council. It was once a big mining town, but now the focus is very much on retail and the city is hoping to be the biggest retail centres in the Midlands, just behind Birmingham, in a few years’ time.
The majority of business parks lie to the east and south of the city with some of the biggest being Wolverhampton Science Park, Sunny House Industrial Park, Satellite Industrial Park, Monmore Business Park and Blackenhall. Most of the bigger office spaces are located closer to town with Bath Avenue, Glaisher Drive, Waterloo Road and York Street being great places to look for rented offices.
The M6 & M54 run along the west and north of town making a commute to Birmingham & Shrewsbury or Liverpool & Manchester incredibly easy. Wolverhampton Station is one of the main stops along the West Coast line and is a big station for regional and national rail travel. There are frequent services to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and London Euston. Birmingham Airport is the closest major airport to the city, roughly 17 mile east via the M6. It is one of the busiest airports in the country with numerous domestic and international flights.
The University of Wolverhampton is located right in the centre of town and is split in the middle by the city’s ring road. It has over 20,000 students studying from a choice of 380 different courses and is known for having one of the highest percentages of mature students in the country, as well as the majority of students having come from the area.
The large student population means that there is a buzzing nightlife in the area and a bad time is a rare sight in Wolverhampton. Its reputation as a major retail centres means it is also a big location for shopping and a booming café culture now exists in the city.
